HISTORY

Kabir Baug Math Sanstha is a Charitable Trust to propagate activities of social and religious nature. Its history dates back to the Peshwa era when the then Peshwa - the ruler of Maratha Kingdom donated land, (the present premises of Kabir Baug) to one Kabir Gosavi for conducting activities of Kabir sect. Since then this place was frequented by sages and seers. The last descendent of this Matha was Late Shri. Parakh Maharaj. Having no legal heir, he transferred this property in the name of a Public Charitable Trust after which this place came to be known as Kabir Baug Matha Sanstha. It was registered under the Public Charitable Trust Act., Maharashtra State. The trust has been carrying activities of socio-cultural relevance in the form of a school, rural students' hostel etc.

In 1989, when a heart patient, Shri Anil Bhide volunteered to undergo yoga therapy from Dr. S. V. Karandikar, a medical practitioner with a 20 year medical practice and a long-time disciple of Yogacharya BKS lyengar; the foundation for 'Sunderraj Yoga Darshan' was laid. Shri Bhide had been advised to undergo cardiac transplant in USA, in 1984; which he did not want to go in for, due to personal reasons. He decided to give yoga therapy a try at the hands of Dr. S. V. Karandikar. He was followed by a steady trickle of such patients on whom the medical faculty had given up, as having intractable disease conditions. This small seed has now developed into a mammoth organisation treating 1000 patients / month with disorders like ischemic heart disease, diabetes, spinal disorders, endocrine diseases, neurological diseases. The institute has a well - trained teaching staff which is engaged in selfless service in imparting therapy to the ailing patients. There are 150 trained teachers in this project.

The evolution of this ideal yoga therapy which is inexpensive, non- invasive. devoid of side - effects and nearest to nature was the brain child of Dr. S. V. Karandikar, who affirms that this therapy based on the principles ofAstanga yoga; can discipline the gross body by practising yoga postures - asanas and the subtle body by using technique of breathing - through Pranayama.

Dr. S. V. Karandikar feels it is necessary to involve youth into this profession. Thus, a diploma course in Yoga therapy was started in Aug. 2000» by the name Navalmal Firodia Yoga Vaidyak Adhyasana. The late Shri Navalmal Firodia sensed this germ of innovation in Dr. Karandikar. He had supported this institution whole heartedly both financially and morally. This is a small tribute, to a man who had always been a magnanimous source of inspiration to this Institute. To keep his memory alive. Dr. Karandikar has decided to introduce a 2 year training programme for graduate youths of today to become full fledged 'Yoga Therapists'.

With the vision of the 21st Century in mind. Dr. S. V. Karandikar emphasises a need to create a Sunjeevan Yoga Guru Peetham which will be in the form of a University of Ancient Indian Healing Arts. such as Ayurveda, Medical Astrology, Music, Architecture, Vedic Mathematics, which are the pathways for evolution of Humanity. In the year - 2000 two batches from Canada have undergone training in Restorative Yoga Therapy at Kabir Baug for 6 weeks duration.
